Resolved Question: Why is Islam opened to such wide interpretation?

I did study Islam at an academic level at university. What I found was a beautiful religion. What angers and confuses me is the extreme interpretation being done at the hands of man. Why does Islam permits such wide interpretations and how are Islamic communities challenging these interpretations?
